Spring tries to spring
The first day of Spring has passed. The day before that, I noticed buds on a
tree, and someone told me that it was the first day of Spring... he was jumping
the gun, but that's OK, mostly. I just want the warm weather already.

V for Vindicated
I have to admit, when I first saw the posters for the Warchowski Brothers' latest
offering, I had my doubts. Let's face it, they stumbled a bit with the Matrix
trilogy and I had a feeling that they might well have shot their wad. The first
few trailers that I saw were compelling, though not compelling enough to pull
me in for the opening night...
Well, we saw it last night, and my doubts
have been completely erased.
V for Vendetta is a fabulous movie. It's well shot, well written, and superbly
acted. Hugo Weaving moves up another notch in my esteem. I have my quibbles
with the whole imprisonment/interrogation sequence, but the movie has a strong
spirit
and
a clear direction, and never
loses its
way. It's more than a popcorn movie, but never comes off shrill or saccharine.
Even
though
they do have a few bullet time sequences, the technique isn't over-used.
I understand that Alan Moore, who wrote the graphic novel that the brothers
adapted for the screenplay, has some reservations about the film. Not surprising. It's rare that
movie adaptations are pitch-perfect. The original novel was a reaction to Thatcherism,
and the film has been adapted to address
Bush/Blair-ism.
Plus
there are some omissions.
No matter what you think of the second and third installments of the Matrix
Trilogy, V for Vendetta is not that, and worth seeing on the big screen. Uh,
conservatives might think disagree...
